Why connect the community with science?
Providing community access to science and technology has many benefits. From sparking curiosity and helping people to understand how to take an evidence-based approach to making decisions about issues that affect them, to inspiring young people about the interesting careers that flow from science, technology, engineering and maths studies. The Coffs Coast Regional Science Hub is focused on connecting our communities with science for a sustainable future.
About Inspiring Australia
Inspiring Australia have initiated Regional Science Hubs to create conscious citizens who care about and take action in this world.
Inspiring Australia is the national strategy for community engagement with science and is part of the Australian Government’s National Innovation and Science Agenda. In NSW, the initiative is delivered from the University of Sydney in partnership with the NSW Department of Industry and the Commonwealth Department of Innovation, Industry and Science.
As part of the Inspiring Australia program, the NSW Regional Science Grants program aims to further develop the network of NSW Regional Science Hubs, enduring local partnerships that bring together multidisciplinary teams to develop and deliver high-profile science events in regional NSW.
Inspiring Australia is about connecting scientists to the broader community and bridging the gap between science and society. The strategy is based on a ‘national framework-local action” approach. Science Hubs provide the grassroots, ground up means of achieving impact by facilitating the delivery of science outreach programs at a local level.

About the Year Round Grants
Since 2013, Science Hubs have been awarded grant funds to deliver events and activities during National Science Week and events at other times of the year.
Year-round engagement grants
To create pathways between all the various science outreach activities that may be underway in a region, the NSW Executive Committee for Inspiring Australia and National Science Week invites Expressions of Interest from Science Hubs that are willing to develop and present civic engagement programs.

Year Round Program Objectives
This program seeks to engage new audiences in discussions with scientists.
We therefore welcome proposals for events that target people who may have had little exposure to scientific concepts. We are particularly interested in supporting events that target those aged 18-35 and are presented in community environments that do not typically feature talks by scientists. We also encourage proposals for initiatives that explore the science in controversial topics. See examples of programs that were supported previously here.
This program is NOT intended to support events targeting for school audiences.
Initiatives that are collaborative, involve multiple partnerships and can show evidence of other sources of funding towards the proposed program of activity will be highly regarded.
All applicants must be committed to joining the Coffs Coast Regional Science Hub. One-off events from groups that do not have an intention of continuing to work together in the longer term will not be considered.
First time applicants are encouraged to apply.
All applications must be received by 5.00pm Friday, 10 August 2018.
Proposed activities must meet at least two of the following criteria:
- Inspiring young people to pursue an interest or aptitude in science
- Extending networks and partnership opportunities in the region
- Encouraging community participation and feedback
- Sharing science achievements and knowledge within the local community
Event selection will be decided on merit and the applicant’s ability to meet the selection criteria.
