Young Naturalists Club: 3-day Camp Out to Wattle Ridge Indigenous Protected Area

February 9 - February 11

- Free

The Wattle Ridge IPA is a beautiful natural areas situated to the west of Dorrigo.  An Aboriginal owned and managed area, we are fortunate to have been invited to hold our first annual YNC camp-out at Wattle Ridge. This will be an opportunity to learn no-match primitive fire making, campfire cooking and bush navigation skills, as well as develop knowledge of the Aboriginal cultural importance of the site.

Meet at 4pm at the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre

We aim to create the next generation of field ecologists.

Supported by adult mentors and in a unique learning environment, participants learn directly from experts about the different ecosystems while developing their passion and curiosity and self-led investigations into the natural world.

The Young Naturalists Club strives to create life-changing experiences and promote nature awareness for young people.

logoBFB_LRThe Young Naturalists Club (YNC) is a club for budding young nature-lovers who, with support and guidance from adult mentors, can develop their naturalist observation skills into lifelong learning. The group meets one Sunday morning per month to explore a range of local environments and engage in birdwatching, animal tracking, canoeing, snorkelling, beachcombing and other naturalist skills.

A box of fresh, local fruit, nuts and other snacks are kindly supplied free of charge at each YNC outing for morning tea by our generous sponsor, Bello Food Box.

YNC Mentors

Walks are led by Andrew Turbill and Karina Davila (both of whom also work for the NSW National Parks and Wildlife). Most outings also have a special guest – including a local ecologist, botanist, marine biologist, or field tracker who provides specialist insights for the group on location. Andrew and Karina volunteer their time.

Who can attend?

YNC is for anyone aged 10-15. Children interested in joining should have a strong interest in nature, are able to participate in group activities which require quiet observation and concentration, and are independent. Participants should be self-motivated and be willing to mix easily with a smallish group of like-minded students.

All attendees need to be YNC Members ($100/yr). This covers insurance and admin (unfortunately, CEL’s insurance is very expensive because we work with youth and the outdoors – both very scary for insurance companies apparently!). The amazing mentors volunteer their time, and Bello Food Box kindly donates healthy snacks every outing (thanks heaps, mentors and BFB!).
