Water! Bellingen Riverwatch – Citizen Science in Action
Join OzGREEN to learn about the health of our rivers and the role of citizen science
Take part in a family water testing event!
Bellingen locals will have the opportunity to learn about the health of our rivers and the role of citizen science at a community water testing event during National Science Week. Participants will also be able to have a go at conducting some water testing themselves with OzGREEN Co-founder, Sue Lennox, during the event on Sunday 19 August 10am – 1pm at the Bellinger River.
This event will include sharing the findings of the Bellingen Riverwatch citizen science program and an update of the efforts to save the critically endangered Bellinger River Snapping Turtle.
‘Bellingen Riverwatch – Our Rivers, Our Future’ is an innovative citizen science program, which aims to create opportunities for scientists and community to work together to monitor and care for the health of the Bellinger, Never Never and Kalang Rivers.
The program involves Bellingen schools and community members in monitoring river health on a monthly basis. Riverwatch is a partnership between OzGREEN and the NSW Government Saving Our Species Unit, in collaboration with Bellingen Shire Council and multiple partners involved the Bellinger River Turtle rescue.
Come and see citizen science in action and find out what we need to do to help look after our rivers. To join in on this family-friendly event, meet at Lavenders Bridge car park on the north side of the river. Bring a sample of water from your drinking water supply collected in a clean sterile container (optional). BYO food and drinks.
This is a Coffs Coast Regional Science Hub event supported by Inspiring Australia, a national strategy to engage communities with science for a sustainable future.
