Young Naturalists Club: Woolgoolga Creek Walk

October 14, 2018 @ 8:30 am - 12:00 pm

- YNC Membership

Woolgoolga creek is lined with some of the last and finest lowland subtropical rainforest left on the coast. On our walk up the creek to a rather lovely waterfall we’ll be looking for some of the most colourful rainforest birds in Australia, including the elusive Rose-crowned Fruit Dove which returns here to nest from overwintering in Papua New Guinea.

Meet at Woolgoolga Creek picnic area.

The Young Naturalists Club strives to create life-changing experiences and promote nature awareness for young people.

We aim to create the next generation of field ecologists.

Supported by adult mentors and in a unique learning environment, participants learn directly from experts about the different ecosystems while developing their passion and curiosity and self-led investigations into the natural world.

logoBFB_LRThe Young Naturalists Club (YNC) is a club for budding young nature-lovers who, with support and guidance from adult mentors, can develop their naturalist observation skills into lifelong learning. The group meets one Sunday morning per month to explore a range of local environments and engage in birdwatching, animal tracking, canoeing, snorkelling, beachcombing and other naturalist skills.

A box of fresh, local fruit, nuts and other snacks are kindly supplied free of charge at each YNC outing for morning tea by our generous sponsor, Bello Food Box.

YNC Mentor – Andrew Turbill

Walks are led by Andrew Turbill (who also works for the NSW National Parks and Wildlife). Most outings also have a special guest – including a local ecologist, botanist, marine biologist, or field tracker who provides specialist insights for the group on location. Andrew volunteers his time.

Who can attend?

YNC is for anyone aged 10-15. Children interested in joining should have a strong interest in nature, are able to participate in group activities which require quiet observation and concentration, and are independent. Participants should be self-motivated and be willing to mix easily with a smallish group of like-minded students.

If anyone would like to offer car pooling for taking other children to any of the outings please just email Andrew and arrangements can hopefully be made between parents.

Please bring:

 • Binoculars (if you have them)
 • Magnifying glass (if you have one)
 • Water and snack
 • Shoes and clothes suitable for walking off-track
 • Small sketch book and pencil/sharpener/pocket knife
 • Rain jacket (if weather looks iffy).
 • Small backpack to carry the above

Please email Andrew on theagitator(AT)bigpond.com with any questions or text him on 0428 205 554 the night before if you have any last minute questions.

How much does it cost?

We offer two tiers of tickets: CEL Members $15, and Non-CEL Members $20. CEL Youth membership is $20 per calendar year and available here

What happened to YNC Membership?

YNC Membership didn’t seem to be working very well so we have transitioned to ticketed events. If you have already purchased YNC membership, please select that option when buying your ticket. We are offering discounted tickets for CEL Members to encourage CEL Membership – which we rely on to run our organisation. If you’re new to YNC and just want to try it out before buying a CEL membership, purchase a Non-CEL Member ticket. Otherwise, become a Youth CEL member for $20 per calendar year at here.

Andrew will have the list of paid YNC and CEL members with him at the event.
